Case study - reducing emissions and optimizing transport processes for a global confectionery manufacturer

Ecological transport is one of the key elements in the implementation of the environmental strategy for production companies. Omega Pilzno has optimized the product logistics of one of the largest confectionery manufacturers in the world, providing an ecological transport solution. 

 

Reducing carbon footprint through sustainable freight transport is achievable by implementing low-emission technologies and optimizing transport processes based on experience.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES: REDUCTION OF CO2 EMISSIONS WITHIN THE INTERNATIONAL SUPPLY CHAIN

 

The core assumption of the project was to find an optimal solution for the international transport of food products at a controlled temperature, thus limiting the negative impact of the manufacturer’s transport activity on the environment.

 

THE SOLUTION: SUSTAINABLE INTEGRATED COMBINATION VEHICLES

Omega Pilzno’s response to the objectives of reducing CO2 emissions in the client’s supply chain was a tailor-made ecological transport solution taking advantage of sustainable integrated set of vehicles intended for food transport.

They include:

  • truck tractor powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) – gas technologies allow to reduce the emission of solid particles (by 99%) and nitrogen dioxide NO2 (by 90%) LNG – powered trucks also reduce greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions.
  • refrigerated semi-trailer with a cooling unit powered by solar panels – the use of photovoltaic technology in cooling units enables the reduction of combustion and emissions by about 30%.

A complementary measure was the organization of regular services on a fixed route between the transhipment points designated by the manufacturer. Arrival at loading and unloading areas generates losses in the long run and has a negative impact on emissions. Owing to the reduction of “empty mileage”, it was also possible to significantly contribute to the reduction of emissions. Unladen trucks emit harmful substances and greenhouse gases. At the same time, they are counterproductive from the point of view of the organization of transport.

REDUCTION OF EMISSIONS BY LIMITING EMPTY MILEAGE

 

RESULTS: ACTUAL EMISSION REDUCTIONS

We commenced the project with assigning one integrated combination vehicle to operate on a client’s specific route. Ultimately, three eco-friendly Omega Pilznoecological sets were used on a regular route.

Reduction of emissions by taking advantage of integrated combination vehicles

Over the period of 9 months, it was possible to save 21 tons of CO2 emissions. This denotes a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 22%. This result was achieved mainly thanks to the use of LNG-powered vehicles and refrigerated semi-trailers equipped with modern cooling units with photovoltaic panels. An important complementary element was the engagement of experienced drivers in the project, consciously applying the principles of ecodriving.

Joint sustainable strategy – optimization for theclient and the operator

As the result of work on route optimization, it was possible to balance the use of resources in both the manufacturer’s operations and in the planning area of Omega Pilzno.

CLIENT – by securing the supply chain and ensuring the regularity of transports, optimization of transport costs has been achieved. An additional benefit is the guaranteed availability of transport.

Reduction of emissions by reducing empty mileage

As part of the mileage optimization, we arranged a regular transport circle between the manufacturer’s facilities in Western Europe and Poland. It is exactly 2,165 kilometres long. By planning regular transports with the use of 3 sets dedicated to the client, it was possible to reduce “empty mileage” to a level below 5%. The remaining part of the route was carried out by taking advantage of a combination vehicle with the full cargo space.

OMEGA PILZNO – as a logistics operator, the company has guaranteed loads on all integrated combination vehicles. There are no losses related to empty mileage or downtime for drivers.

The future development of the project for the client will be the use of BioLNG gas, which will enable further reduction of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.

 

SUMMARY

We started the project with assigning one integrated ecological set to the customer service on a specific transport wheel. Ultimately, three ecological Omega Pilzno sets were used on a regular route.

 

Project objectives:

  • a sustainable solution for the transport of goods of the confectionery manufacturer, by taking advantage of integrated combination vehicles,
  • reducing the carbon footprint in the client’s supply chain,
  • resource optimization.

 

Solutions:

  • a dedicated fleet of Omega Pilzno’s vehicles for our client: 3 eco-friendly combination vehicles (reefers with a solar panel and LNG tractors) operating on a regular route between the client’s manufacturing facilities.
  • optimal use of the mentioned combination vehicles, which denotes that the routes are planned in regular circles, preventing empty mileage to minimum.

 

Results:

  • 22% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel combination vehicles on the same route, we reduced our CO2 emissions by 21 tons from February to October 2021,
  • an additional positive impact on the carbon footprint in the manufacturer’s supply chain due to the reduction of empty mileage to around 5% of the entire route,
  • enhanced collaboration thanks to a sustainable strategy on both sides -the logistics operator and the client.
